Libreville la capitale gabonaise a abrité le 9 juin 2022, les travaux de l’atelier du projet d’Appui d’intensification durable de la production à travers des systèmes de culture protégés, adaptés, et à la sensibilisation sur les bonnes pratiques d’irrigation en zones urbaines d’Afrique Centrale. Organisé sous l’égide de la FAO, c’est le ministre gabonais de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation Charles Mve Ellah qui a procédé au lancement des travaux.
Réuni autour d’une même table, les experts de la FAO et les acteurs engagés dans les bonnes pratiques d’irrigation en zones urbaines d’Afrique Centrale ont longuement planché sur le dit projet. A l’entame des travaux, la diplomate de la FAO en poste à Libreville Aissa Mamadoul Taibou Chargée de Bureau Sous-régional de la FAO pour l’Afrique Centrale a au nom de S. E. Hélder Muteia Coordonnateur du Bureau Sous régional de la FAO pour l’Afrique Centrale, et Représentant de la FAO au Gabon, à Sao Tome et Principe a décliné les enjeux cruciaux de cet atelier.
<<Il s’agit d’une initiative visant à intensifier durablement la production, à améliorer la productivité tout en faisant la promotion des techniques de production innovantes et en renforçant les capacités des acteurs du secteur agricole notamment les producteurs maraîchers et les techniciens d’encadrement. Aussi est-elle en phase avec les conclusions du dernier Sommet Mondial sur les systèmes alimentaires tenue à New York en septembre 2021 dans le cadre de la Décennie d’action pour réaliser les Objectifs de développement durable (ODD) d’ici à 2030.
Au terme de sa mise en œuvre, l’ambition de ce projet sera de : Renforcer les capacités productives des systèmes de productions agricoles; Sensibiliser et former les acteurs du secteur agricole, notamment les personnels d’encadrement et de vulgarisation sur les opportunités de production sous-abri adaptées au contexte local pour une agriculture sensible à la nutrition; Disposer d’un Guide Pratique élaboré pour servir de document de référence des Cultures protégées au Gabon et en Afrique Centrale.>> A-t-elle indiqué.
Le projet qui concerne trois pays de la sous région Afrique centrale, notamment le Gabon, le Congo Brazzaville, et la Guinée équatoriale, vise à résorber la problématique du développement agricole en Afrique ou dans la sous-région, qui malgré un énorme potentiel et des atouts importants peine encore à participer pleinement à un véritable essor économique et social dans ces pays.
En déclarant ouvert les travaux de cet atelier, le patron de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation a justifié la tenue de cet atelier par la nécessité de développer le secteur agricole a travers une intensification durable de la production agricole dans les zones urbaines et périurbaines permettant d’atténuer les effets néfastes de cette urbanisation.

Entre 2014 et 2017 la FAO a mis en œuvre le projet GCP/SFC/001/MUL intitulé ”la sécurité alimentaire renforcée en milieu urbain en Afrique Centrale grâce à une meilleure disponibilité de la nourriture produite localement’’ apportant ainsi un soutien matériel et technique à plus de 3 500 bénéficiaires situés au Gabon, au Cameroun, au Tchad, en Guinée Equatoriale, à Sao Tomé & Principe, et au Congo.
L’objectif du projet était de promouvoir le développement de l’horticulture urbaine et péri-urbaine comme un moyen d’alléger les pressions économiques et sociales dues au ralentissement de la croissance et à l’exode rural. Ce projet a d’ailleurs abouti à l’élaboration d’une stratégie sous-régionale de développement des villes vertes en Afrique centrale.
